The Oxted Young Persons’ Theatre (OYPT) is a totally inclusive theatre company working with young people (from 8 to 25 years) from Hurst Green, Godstone, Caterham, Oxted and Tatsfield, in conjunction with local schools, youth clubs and Surrey Police. Some participants have mind disabilities or other special needs, others may be NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). This is the only theatre group in the area that offers free or assisted places for young people from low income families or those with disabilities. The group works with all needs, ages and abilities and, through drama workshops, offers practical training and gives young people the chance to take control of their own learning by collaboratively exploring the fusion between arts and the community.
Peter Lee said that, “Our HSYA grant provided additional drama sessions for these vulnerable young people, offering them a safe, supportive environment in which to develop. The overarching aim is to change young people’s lives through drama and to develop their confidence and self-esteem as they learn new skills.”
