The halow project is a Surrey-based charity that runs a range of exciting projects and services for young people aged 16-35 with learning disabilities, in order to foster their independence and uiltimately to help them find meaningful employment. Each year, through a broad portfolio of services, halow enables and nurtures the independence of 170 young people. In 2014, the High Sheriff Youth Awards helped fund the Crafty Creations project – a work opportunity scheme that’s part of the halow A Reason To Get Up programme. It gives young people the chance to design, create, assemble and sell a variety of crafts made from recycled materials. A group from halow ran a stand at the Annual Celebration Event at ExxonMobil, where they showed guests the crafts they had created.
“I visited halow and joined a craft class where I made a woollen lanyard and was taught how to operate the group’s handmade glitter blaster,” recalls Peter Lee. “Crafty Creations is a fantastic way for young people to improve their skills and helps them find work in the local Surrey community.”
