Total Football is a youth project in Leatherhead which runs a competitive six a side football league on Therfield School’s astroturf each Friday evening – a busy time for anti-social behaviour in this deprived area of north Leatherhead.

Young people aged between 11-16 are invited to enter teams and compete to become League winners. The project, which launched in 2007, has become a huge success attracting 55 young people every week and as the High Sheriff comments, “it perfectly illustrates the benefits of getting young people into sport – getting them active.”

The project is run mainly by young volunteers who were all former participants and who are looking to pass on what they have learned and give something back. The HSYA supports them to complete Football Coaching and Refereeing Courses with Surrey County Council. The High Sheriff, Peter Lee, confirmed that “This very successful project was the winner of the HSYA Sports Award at the Active Surrey Sports Awards in 2014 and was awarded a Certificate of Commendation in the National Crimebeat Awards.”
