High Sheriff 2014-2015, Peter Lee recalls: “When I visited Surrey Youth Motorcycle Trials Sport Club up at the Brackendene Sports Park outside Chertsey one Saturday afternoon in June 2014 there were young people – boys and girls – right across the specially designed 4.5 acre off-road course. Everywhere you looked, there they were, demonstrating the most extraordinary feats of control on their diesel and electric powered motorcycles. It was awesome.” The Club, run by the remarkable Eddie Renham, engages up to 40 young people from just four years old up to 17 in organised novice and beginner trials each month. Trial riding is the safest form of motorcycle sport, and competition takes place on sections aimed at agility and skill rather than speed. It is a great place for the young people to benefit from safe, structured and monitored amateur motorcycle training. The young riders learn skills (including maintaining their motorcycles) and discipline, as well as increased levels of concentration, responsibility and social skills. And they have huge fun! The HSYA grant for £2,000 provided funding to improve the trial course and ensure motorcycle safety.
