Ashtead Rally Karting has been delivering a dynamic and challenging Motor Sport Project for young people since 1999. Operating out of Ashtead Youth Centre, it has grown to now running five karts at a time. The project prides itself on accommodating anyone who is interested and aims to nurture young people’s skills, abilities, confidence and sense of self, in order to support their development into confident adults who will fully achieve their potential. Workshops take place once a week at Ashtead Youth Centre; there are regular practice drives on a local track and race weekends in Ipswich once a month. The HSYA has awarded a grant to fund replacement radios, Duke of Edinburgh Award registration and financial assistance for young people unable to afford their own activity fees. “When I visited the project and chatted to some of the participants it was clear that they acquire mechanical skills, discover the value of team work, learn how to drive karts – safely as well as competitively – and how to marshal for other drivers, as well as having fun,” explained Peter Lee.
