Kane FM’s Get Experience and Go Somewhere has been created as a diversionary radio project for young people, providing much needed work experience and volunteering opportunities to improve their technical, social, cultural and artistic skills. The overall objective is to build confidence, team skills and self-esteem, which in turn improves employability, community integration and participation.

The project provides support to marginalised and disaffected young people aged over 14, who may experience various barriers to accessing the arts, training and employment in a way that is meaningful and engaging. By building links with the community through this project the young people are less likely to engage in anti-social behaviour and crime. In addition, young people can take advantage of a range of opportunities within the media industry to improve their technical and social skills whilst developing their musical and artistic talents.

HSYA has been delighted to support this successful project which has already been of clear benefit for a number of young people. Richard Whittington commented, “My visit to the radio station (and a live interview!) showed how this great idea was helping young people find a role and to advance their life skills. Many had found their time at Kane FM had transformed their lives and they had been able to move on to employment.”
