Woking Urban Saints offers 10 to 16 year olds in Maybury a place to meet weekly, a programme of simple games and activities – often run by the young leaders – and a meal. The High Sheriff Youth Awards awarded a £1,000 grant to subsidise a trip for 27 young people – including three ‘home grown’ leaders – to Carroty Wood, an activity centre with residential accommodation that offers opportunities for personal development. A previous activity trip there by Urban Saints had resulted in great benefits and behavioural improvement for the young people, raising their expectations and confidence.

Project leader Clare Strong commented: “Our High Sheriff Youth Award came at a time when it was proving very difficult to offer the service that we feel the young people deserve, due to lack of funding. It also seemed that there was a lack of understanding of just how important these kinds of services are in supporting young people. Our Award gave all of us a real boost when we needed it most, so a really big thank you.”
