For the second year running, the High Sheriff Youth Awards has funded the equipment for a five-a-side football tournament at Goldsworth Park, Woking. This includes kit for young people who would not otherwise be able to afford it, plus medals and certificates. The football challenge was aimed at boys and girls aged between 11 and 14 years.

One of the key organisers was PCSO Dino Gomez from the Woking Safer Neighbourhood Team (right in this picture]. He says that young people in Goldsworth Park told him they have always wanted to play in a proper football tournament, with marked pitches and referees. So he decided to do something about it. A big event, with 16 teams competing, this annual tournament has become a real community occasion that brings together young people, family and friends of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures. The winning team plays the police team and the event helps the police to engage with young people in a very positive way, gaining their trust and building confidence. Most important, it gives young people a focus for their energies in the summer holidays.
