A new project – called 'Alcohol Lessons for Life' – so impressed the High Sheriff Youth Awards Council that a special one-off grant of £5,000 has been awarded for 2011-12. This has enabled the comprehensive programme of teacher training and classroom interventions to be developed by Coram Life Education and rolled out across five Surrey primary schools.

Top year pupils at St John's School in Dorking were the first to pilot the project. They welcomed the High Sheriff of Surrey 2011-12, Professor Michael Joy OBE, to their Parent Assembly on Wednesday 18th January (left) – and delivered powerful messages to him and other invited guests on the dangers of alcohol, the harm it causes to health, and the impact it has on the community in terms of anti-social behaviour.
